As of 1110 pm, the snow is ending from SW to NE across Alabama. The snow will end in most of BHM metro by midnight, but may continue in Montgomery and Anniston until 1 am and Auburn until 2 am. Some snow totals (in inches): Phil Campbell 3.75, Sumiton 3.5, Crestwood 2, Trussville 1.5, Tuscaloosa 1.5, Hamilton 3, Jasper 1.8, Cuba 1, Haleyville 2, Parrish 2.2, Graysville 1, Vernon 4.5, Gadsden 1, Ensley 1, Fayette 2, Bluff Creek 1.5, Bluff Park 2, Calera 1.2.
Temperatures are now below freezing almost to MGM and Selma.
With several hours of snow still to go in east Alabama (Auburn, Wedowee, Roanoke, Heflin), an additional 1-2″ of snow is possible there.
As for roads, we’ve heard of icy bridges and even a few surface streets. As the night goes on with colder air (upper 20s) and no travel on the roads, they will get worse. No travel is recommended over north and central Alabama tonight and tomorrow morning. We should climb above freezing by 10 am or so in BHM, with the sun coming out around that time. So, travel on BHM roads may be dangerous until 10 or 11 am, especially on bridges and roads at higher elevations. Schools opening at 10 am (to avoid taking a full snow day) concerns me a little right now, since buses would have to run starting at 830 or so, and we will likely still be freezing at that time (and cloudy). School superintendents and business owners will have difficult decisions in the morning; I like to err on the side of caution.
