A Few Scattered Showers/Storms Later Today

UNUSUAL JULY PATTERN: A rather anomalous upper air pattern continues for mid-summer, as we have a deep upper trough over the eastern half of the U.S. in place this morning. This was responsible for severe storms over parts of Alabama over the weekend, including an EF-0 tornado near Opelika Saturday. Continue reading →

Less Storms Today

Storms less active and not as strong today with highs around 90. An anomalous pattern with a deep trough over the eastern US will keep the extreme heat away with highs in the upper 80s through the middle of the week. But scattered to numerous storms will remain a daily feature for Alabama. Continue reading →

Severe Storms Possible Tonight

SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR ALABAMA THROUGH TOMORROW: An unusually active pattern for July is ahead for Alabama. On the maps, we have a strong upper high to the west, which is responsible for triple digit heat for much of Texas and Oklahoma. And, there is an upper trough with strong wind fields from the Great Lakes down into the southern U.S. This will provide dynamic support for strong to severe thunderstorms for Alabama over the next 36 hours. Severe Storms Possible Tomorrow Night

RADAR CHECK: We started off this day with a batch of rain and storms this morning over Northwest Alabama… but this afternoon the action has shifted over to the eastern counties of the state on the outflow of the morning storms. Most of the rain at mid-afternoon was east of a line from Anniston to Selma; some places there are seeing heavy amounts of rain. Continue reading →

Hot, Humid, Scattered Storms

SUN, HEAT, STORMS: The weak front that drifted into North Alabama has pretty much dissipated, and Alabama is in a moist, unstable airmass this morning. We note a few showers over parts of West Alabama around daybreak, and we will deal with scattered showers and thunderstorms through the day, with most of them coming this afternoon and early tonight. Chance of any one spot getting wet is around one in three; otherwise the day will feature a mix of sun and clouds with a high in the low 90s. Continue reading →

Hot Afternoon; A Few Storms

RADAR CHECK: As expected, showers are few and far between across the northern third of Alabama this afternoon… but we do have a few heavier storms south of I-20 as I write this update at 3:15p CT. Heavy rain was falling over parts of Shelby County, and in the broad zone from Montgomery over to Alexander City and Opelika. Storms are moving slowly to the south, and will fade away later this evening once the sun goes down. Temperatures are in the low 90s in most places, but of course it is cooler where thunderstorms have formed. Continue reading →

Showers/Storms Most Numerous Over South Alabama Today

ON THE MAPS: A weak surface front is creeping through North Alabama this morning; it represents the leading edge of drier air over Tennessee and Kentucky. The front will stall out around I-20 today, meaning the most numerous showers and storms should be over the southern two-thirds of the state this afternoon. Understand we could see a few showers over North Alabama today as well, but they should be pretty isolated. Otherwise, today will be partly sunny with a high in the low 90s. Continue reading →

Drier Air Creeps Into North Alabama Tomorrow

ON THE MAPS: A surface front is drifting southward through Tennessee this afternoon, and we have a number of showers and thunderstorms over the Tennessee Valley of North Alabama at mid-afternoon. We will maintain the chance of showers and storms tonight as the front pushes into our state from the north. Heavier storms will be capable of producing heavy rain, gusty winds, and lots of lightning. Continue reading →
