Spotty Afternoon Showers for Saturday

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected over the next seven days, and temperatures will rise throughout the period as well. We’re watching the chance for a tropical low-pressure system to develop over the Gulf this weekend, which could bring higher rain chances to the southern half to two-thirds of the state for the first half of the week, but it’s too early to say for sure. Showers and Storms Statewide for Sunday

Today through Wednesday will be quite rainy statewide. A low-pressure system moves toward Alabama today, then will stall over the Tennessee Valley through Monday night. Its associated surface boundary will push through central Alabama through Tuesday, then the feature will lift back to the northwest. The low and surface boundary will be the reason for the elevated rain chances statewide through Wednesday. The second half of the week will return to normal afternoon summer thunderstorms as an upper-level ridge over the Northern Plains builds. We will be on the ridge’s eastern periphery, so rain chances dwindle and highs increase. Continue reading →

Scattered Showers Statewide Today

After Alabama got very lucky with isolated showers and thunderstorms for the holiday, we run out of luck today. Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms will move across Alabama as an upper-level trough digs into the southeast. It will bring a low-end severe weather threat to the northern half of the state. Tomorrow we’ll see greater coverage of showers and thunderstorms again. A cold front will push through the northern half of the state Tuesday, then we return to our typical afternoon scattered thunderstorm pattern as another ridge builds in toward mid-week. Hot, Humid, Possible Showers for the 4th

As we head into Sunday, we see a major pattern shift that will bring Alabama slightly cooler temperatures and slightly higher rain chances. The upper-level ridge that has plagued Alabama with heat this week will move eastward, and a broad upper-level trough will take its place. More widespread rain is expected Sunday through Tuesday before another, but weaker, upper-level ridge moves into the Southeast toward the end of the week. Continue reading →

Heat Settles In, Storms Northeast Today

Today will be mostly dry, but northeast Alabama will be wetter, as some strong to marginally storms will move through. These hot and dry conditions will persist Monday across most of Alabama, except showers and thunderstorms may fire off in the evening. Then a storm system is expected to push through the southeast Monday night. More Rain for Alabama

Another day of widespread showers and thunderstorms is anticipated across Alabama today as a stalled frontal boundary and a short wave allow for a large swath of storms to move through. Father’s Day looks to be a little less messy with a more scattered shower pattern expected statewide. Then a high-pressure and upper-level pattern tries to settle into south Alabama Monday, limiting rain chances south, while rain will move through the north easily.. A cold front will move into Alabama Tuesday and stall again over the north-central portion of the state. Rain sticks around for the end of the week as another trough will move over the region. Rain and Storms South Today

North Alabama will be mostly dry today with rain chance increasing as you head south. This is due to a cold front that has entered the northwest that will move south throughout the day. The front will lift back to the north Saturday, keeping rain chances elevated south and limited north. Then a low-pressure system to our west will bring southerly flow and high moisture content back to the north Sunday, and the entire state will see showers and thunderstorms. Storms will be more common north on Monday due to more moisture from an area of low-pressure to the west. Then the low’s cold front will push through Alabama Tuesday and Wednesday, keeping rain chances elevated across the state. Afternoon scattered showers and thunderstorms return Thursday.
