Rain for Most of AL, Storms South Today

Our active weather pattern continues today, with widespread and heavy rainfall falling across central and south Alabama today, accompanied by a low-end severe weather threat for the south. Tomorrow should see less coverage of rainfall wise as it is limited to the south, then Thursday gets interesting. A tropical system (regardless of strength or status) will move across the Southeast, bringing more heavy rainfall and a low-end severe weather threat for the entire state. Rain will not back off Friday as a cold front traverses through Alabama. We are in for multiple days of thunder, wind, rain, and flooding. A brief break from the rain is possible Saturday, then increase again Sunday onwards in the north but stay on a declining trend in the south. Continue reading →

Get Your Umbrellas Ready!

The story this week is rain and potential for flooding, especially in the southern two-thirds of Alabama. Yesterday’s front has stalled over central Alabama and will remain there through Wednesday, interacting with short wave pulses and the upper-level trough. This is a recipe for multiple days of rain across the region. South Alabama will see multiple days of rain as well due to that trough and the tropical low that will weaken but provide plenty of moisture to the region this week. North Alabama will be drier today and tomorrow, but rain chances uptick quickly as that low and another cold front from the northwest nears later this week. Continue reading →

A Wet Week Ahead!

Widespread rain and thunderstorms are expected in north Alabama as a cold front will move through the area this afternoon and evening. Central and south Alabama will see the same scattered afternoon pattern we’ve seen recently. The front will move southward slowly on Monday and Tuesday, bringing more widespread rain and storms to the state, focusing more on the central and southern portions of the state. The upper-level pattern will become zonal (horizontal) toward the latter half of the week, but expected short waves will pass through the northern half of the state, keeping rain chances elevated. The southern half of the state will return to a less broad rain pattern.  Continue reading →

Wetter Weekend Ahead

We enter a wetter pattern as a high-pressure system moves east, allowing more moisture to be present over the state. Rain chances are elevated over the next few days across most of the state before we see a low chance of afternoon showers each day later in the week. The state will get quite warm in the coming week as an upper-level ridge will set up to our west and allow highs to rise. Continue reading →

May Ends With More Afternoon Storms

Today features another day of afternoon showers and thunderstorms for the state. A stationary front will sit across central Alabama today and move south tomorrow. Tomorrow, a cluster of strong thunderstorms will make its way through Alabama in the afternoon and evening, bringing a low-level severe threat with it. Then an area of high-pressure will begin to develop on Tuesday, drying out the northern half of the state, while the southern half of the state sees rain chances until Wednesday. Rain chances will be low through Saturday statewide, and a dry pattern will form. Continue reading →
